Temae public beach threatened by the Wane group and the current revision of the 2013 PGA position of the Commune de Moorea Maiao

Following the article in Polynésie 1ère about the worrying situation of our coastline, the Tahei ‘auti ia Moorea Federation wishes to point out that Moorea’s only entirely natural public beach is To’oatea beach, better known as “Tema’e public beach”.

This beach represents just 0.027% of the 30% of beaches mentioned in the article, i.e. 550 meters of white sand for a population of 18,000 residents and 160,000 annual tourists.

If this public beach were to disappear to belong to the private Wane group, Moorea would no longer have a natural public beach, leaving residents and visitors to congregate on Tahiamanu beach, ¼ of which has been artificially reconstructed in part, or the tiny private beach of Tiahura, the latter on probation as it awaits a hotel project, and of which only about 50 meters is actually usable.

We would also like to point out that the government has all the legal means at its disposal to acquire the 3.2-hectare plot in the General Development Plan in order to preserve and guarantee a public space, including the 550-metre beach. It is crucial to take steps to ensure that To’oatea beach remains accessible to all, in order to preserve this vital space for our population and our tourists.
