Manutea Lodge: building permit revoked for fraud

For several months, the Tāhei ‘Auti Ia Mo’orea Federation has been working alongside its members and the island’s residents to oppose the Manutea Lodge project in Pihaena, which was approved despite serious irregularities: lack of a prior impact assessment, false statements, and work carried out without authorization in an area at high risk of landslides.

In order to make the voice of the population heard, the Federation called on everyone to participate in the public inquiry, enabling many citizens of Moorea to submit their comments and oppose this project, which is considered dangerous for the environment and safety. At the same time, an appeal was filed with the administrative court to request the cancellation of the permit and the restoration of the site.

As reported by TNTV in this article, the public prosecutor has issued damning conclusions for SARL Manutea Lodge. According to him, the company “deliberately misled the authorities” by presenting its project as a simple road widening project, rather than as a development prior to the construction of several homes in Pihaena. This “fraud” could lead to the cancellation of the permit issued by the Country in August 2024.

This step marks a major breakthrough and demonstrates the power of collective action. The Federation would like to thank all the individuals and associations who have been involved in this citizen initiative, as well as its active members for their expertise and voluntary involvement.

As cited by Tahiti Infos in its article, the Tāhei ‘Auti ia Mo’orea Federation and the Moorea-Maiao Municipality are now requesting that the company carry out a detailed assessment of the works, ensure the safety of the site, and above all restore the mountain and the affected land to their original state.

This decision is a decisive victory for the protection of Moorea and demonstrates the importance of citizen vigilance. The administrative court has revoked the building permit on grounds of fraud, acknowledging the serious irregularities that had been reported from the outset. The Tāhei ‘Auti Ia Mo’orea Federation will remain mobilized to ensure that the site is fully restored and will continue to keep the public informed of developments in this case.
