Subvention granted for the kits “’Ohura’a o te tau”

Objectives :

The cultural project “Ohura’a o te tau” or “the cycle of time” aims to encourage younger generations to observe the nature around them in order to strengthen their connection to “my Earth, my Ocean, my Sky” in line with ancestral knowledge and skills.

The Federation has developed educational tools in the form of learning kits, online resources, and a YouTube channel available to all learners, with a focus on young audiences. All documents are available in three languages: Tahitian, French, and English.

The request for support from the FDVA will enable the development of the tools that have been created and tested, and the transmission of all the information necessary for their use to learners.

Description :

Description:

In 2023, the Federation is leading a project to bring together Polynesian knowledge in order to pass on to younger generations the ability to anchor themselves in the time and space of their environment.

In 2024, with graphic design assistance from the Polynesian Center for Arts and Crafts, an educational kit was created and tested with young audiences and volunteer learners. Written, visual, audio, and video documentation of the kit’s contents is available online.

Ten kits have been produced. Each kit contains four roll-ups (0.85 m x 2 m printed panels) and a round printed banner (ø2 m). Each roll-up is specific.

1- TORO TE A’A: the place of the “child” in their family line and in the history of their people.

2- TERE O RĀ: their place in space through observing the sun’s path, locating the four cardinal points (using the body as a compass), and the solstices and equinoxes.

3- MATARI’I-I-NI’A or Hotura’a, Tau ‘auhune: observing the abundance in the family garden, the return from fishing; its convergence with the starry sky will anchor the earth, sky, and sea.

4- MATARI’I-I-RARO or Tau o’e: observing the period of restriction through the return of specific activities, ature fishing, the blowing mara’amu, Matau a Maui in the sky, the presence of whales in our ocean.

5- The TE HEI-HONO-RAU tarpaulin or the link between Te Ra’i, Te Fenua ‘e Te Moana. Observing the zenith star of one’s place of life, its pass, its river, all these elements sung in the himene tarava. The art of Fai will allow these observations to be memorized and consolidated.

The distribution of each kit will be accompanied by an information session for learners.
