Opinion on the public consultation regarding Temae Beach

The federation welcomes the recent request by the President of the Country to organize a public consultation on the future of Temae.

As a reminder, as early as May 2022, under the initiative of five elected officials from the municipality of Moorea-Maiao, supported by the Tāhei Federation and relayed by the Mā’ohi Protestant Church, a citizen petition was launched. Its aim was to ask members of the Moorea-Maiao municipal council to include on the agenda of a future council meeting a draft resolution to organize a local consultation of voters on the future of Reserved Area No. 22, included in Moorea’s General Development Plan (PGA) since 2013. This area is intended for a public garden project benefiting the residents of Moorea-Maiao, located in the coconut grove of the current public beach of Temae.

At the end of one month of consultation, we had collected 3,733 signatures from residents, including 2,805 registered voters, all in favor of bringing this issue before the population so that they too can express their opinion. This strong mobilization reflects not only the population’s attachment to this site, but also the growing interest of citizens in decisions that impact their quality of life.

It is also important to recall that this initiative complies with existing regulations, which since 2004 allow for consulting the electorate of a municipality on decisions that local authorities are considering in matters falling within their jurisdiction.

The federation hopes to be involved in discussions regarding the implementation of this consultation (the question to be asked, its organization, etc.), and emphasizes that its position on the matter remains unchanged. It will continue to advocate for the preservation of Reserved Area No. 22. This position is final.
