Grumbling against the Paetou project in Moorea

In Moorea, despite a meeting on Wednesday evening with the project’s developer, Olivier Billaudet, public discontent is growing over the planned development of three housing estates in Teavaro. As the chosen site is in a marshy area, the project developer has no alternative but to fill in part of the 21-hectare estate with 65,000 m3 of earth. A figure that makes Teavaro cringe. Add to this the question of sanitation, and the local population is up in arms. “With this project for several lots, several houses… what really concerns us is the pollution, which will certainly go out to sea. And when we talk about protecting the environment, we’re also thinking about the fish that live in the lagoon. What are we going to do about it? This project is so immense, and it really touches our hearts to see buildings taking the place of such a beautiful place,” laments Lucie Perreyre, a member of the Tiaì Fenua collective. In his Paetou project, Olivier Billaudet presented three subdivisions: two with 20 lots each for housing and another with 10 lots for commercial activities. “We’re at the stage of the environmental impact study, which is compulsory, with a public inquiry. On the other hand, I’ve also filed subdivision permits for these three developments,” says the project owner. If the answers given by the project owner were not convincing, it was above all the lack of information, consultation and discovery of such a project in the media that annoyed the population and the town council.
