Ongoing projects, Groupe Wane flouts APC ban and jeopardizes Moorea’s historic stores
The Wane group, despite the formal prohibition n°22/0005S issued by the Polynesian Competition Authority (APC) on June 23, 2022, persists in its desire to build a Carrefour hypermarket on Moorea. This outrageous decision constitutes a flagrant violation of the regulatory authority and seriously threatens the island’s economic equilibrium.
Total disregard for Moorea island stores
By deliberately ignoring the opinion of the APC, the Wane group is showing total disregard for the rule of law and the interests of local consumers and retailers. This unfair competition is likely to lead to the closure of many historic businesses, resulting in job losses and a homogenization of the commercial offer.
Serious institutional inconsistency
Even more troubling, on September 6, 2023, the Construction and Planning Department (DCA) authorized the construction of this store, in direct contradiction with the APC’s decision. This institutional incoherence is unacceptable and raises serious questions about the way the country’s services operate.
The consequences of such a project
Beyond the economic consequences, the Carrefour project represents a major environmental threat. The more than 600 people who took part in the environmental impact study expressed their deep concerns, which remain unanswered to this day. A hypermarket of this size is a real ecological disaster, jeopardizing Moorea’s biodiversity and natural resources.
A call for mobilization
Faced with this alarming situation, the Tahei ‘auti ia Moorea Federation launches a solemn appeal:
- To the relevant authorities: We call for swift and firm action to enforce the APC’s decision and cancel the authorization to build the Carrefour.
- To the Wane group: We urge the group to abandon this senseless project and adopt an approach that respects the environment and the local economy.
- To the elected representatives: We call on the people’s representatives to strengthen the powers of the APC and put in place a more rigorous legislative framework to prevent such abuses.
We can’t let this happen! The future of Moorea and its inhabitants is at stake.
