Carrefour & Painapo Market, a necessary comparison

In Maharepa, two commercial projects are set to develop side by side.

  • Shopping center and Carrefour, by SCI SOGIL (WANE Group)
  • Painapo Market, by SODIMA (Maharepa Supermarket)

These two projects differ greatly in terms of their origin, scale, and economic rationale.

🔹 Local employment: continuity versus promises

Painapo Market

The Maharepa Supermarket currently employs 40 people, 95% of whom are full-time and at least half of whom are on permanent contracts.

There are plans to hire around 30 additional employees for the future project, bringing the total number of jobs to around 70.

Carrefour

The project is announced as creating 98 jobs, but official documents indicate that:

  • 7 positions would be subcontracted (security, cleaning),
  • 35 positions would depend on the shops renting space in the mall,
  • only 56 jobs would be in the supermarket, including 27 part-time positions.

It has also been specified that management positions would not be reserved for Moorea residents, although the exact number has not been disclosed.

🔹 A question of model for Moorea

This comparison highlights two opposing visions:

  • on the one hand, a project led by a very powerful economic player from outside the island,
  • on the other, a local family business that is already integrated into the economic and social fabric of Moorea.

Beyond the projects themselves, it is the coherence of the island’s commercial development that is at stake.
