What is MAMC?
TLDR:
The Mo’orea Maritime Area Management Committee (CGEM) ensures the proper management of the island’s lagoon and coastline.
Composed of elected officials, associations, fishermen, representatives of the tourism industry, and local government services, it provides advice on projects, permits, research, and regulations related to the maritime area.
A new decree on anchoring (No. 910 CM of June 26, 2025) now sets the rules for mooring vessels around Mo’orea.

The Mo’orea Maritime Area Management Committee is composed of 23 full members, including:
- the mayor of Mo’orea and five deputy mayors from each of Mo’orea’s associated municipalities,
 - civil society, represented by five representatives from the Mo’orea fishermen’s federation,
 - five representatives of tourism and leisure,
 - one representative of cultural associations,
 - one representative of scientific research, one representative of the environment,
 - and finally representatives of the country’s services (DCA-DRM-DIREN-DPAM-DAF).
 
The CGEM’s mission is to:
– develop and adopt a strategic document enabling it to examine its internal and external contexts, make projections for the future, and determine the strategies that will enable it to achieve its missions and visions for better management of the Mo’orea Maritime Area.
– to monitor these action plans and ensure their consistency with public policies,
– to give its opinion within the deadline imposed by the competent authorities, failing which it will be deemed favorable on:
– French Polynesia’s projects and draft legislation related to the PGEM, such as the new Mo’orea anchorage decree.
– Requests for administrative authorizations relating to the lagoon area, particularly with regard to the occupation of the public maritime domain and commercial navigation: requests for temporary occupation authorizations, opinions on nautical activities, etc.
– applications for administrative authorizations relating to land use and having a significant impact on the preservation of the lagoon and coastline of Mo’orea.
– Scientific research projects as provided for in Article 16 of Decree No. 2009CM
– Various works on maritime space as well as public utility works as provided for in Article 18 of Decree No. 2009 CM
– The appropriateness of public or private projects that have an impact on the lagoon, by asking our population to report them with supporting photos, by calling the Department of the Environment at 40476666, or by email at secretariat.diren@administration.gov.pf
– the charter setting out best practices for approaching cetaceans as provided for in Article 41 of Decree No. 2009 CM
– A decree on anchoring in Mo’orea was finally issued on June 26, 2025, Decree No. 910 CM, regulating the anchoring and parking of vessels in the waters surrounding our magnificent island.
